What is belbek airfield?

Belbek airfield is a military airbase located in the Crimean peninsula, Ukraine. It was established in 1956 as a Soviet Air Force base and was used by the Ukrainian Air Force after Ukraine gained independence in 1991.

During the 2014 Crimean crisis, the Russian military occupied the airbase, and it became a site of tensions between Ukrainian and Russian forces. In March 2014, a group of Ukrainian soldiers and officers attempted to break through the Russian blockade of the airbase, resulting in a brief standoff.

The airbase features a 2.8 km runway, multiple hangars, and facilities for aircraft maintenance, fuel storage, and air traffic control. It has been home to various aircraft, including MiG-29 fighters, transport planes, and helicopters, and has been used for military exercises and training.

As of 2021, the Belbek airfield remains under Russian control and is currently used by the Russian military, including for flights to Syria.
